City Bowl

The City Bowl is the main city centre which sits in a natural bowl under Table Mountain. Company Garden is a lovely park on the sight where early settlers grew produce for the passing East India Company's ships. Surrounding the park are museums, buildings and churches as well as a Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, fish pond and aviary inside.

Backing on to the Gardens is the Parliament buildings and Tuynhuys. This is the Presidents official residence when he is in Cape Town.

Within the park is the South African Museum and the South African Art Gallery. Close by there is the Slave Lodge, Planetarium, Jewish and Holocaust Museums. Cape Towns Anglican Cathedral, St. George's, is located at the entrance to the park, and St Mary's Catholic Cathedral at the edge.

To learn more about South Africa's history then take in a visit to the District Six Museum. It explains how the apartheid government cleared whole areas to avoid different races living side by side.

Artscape, which is Cape Town's main performing arts theatre, is located in the centre of the Bowl.

Long Street is the main place for night life with plenty of bars and restaurants. The V & A Waterfront,

a regenerated port area, provides plenty of places to shop and eat. There are always street music and entertainment to be found here. You can get boat rides around the harbour or a ferry to Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

From the City Bowl it is easy to reach the views of Signal Hill or take a Cable Car to the Top of Table Mountain.
